A lot happened in 2016. From terror to concerts, this year saw many changes, some good and some bad, which we’ll have to live with the rest of our lives. While it’s not possible to list them all down, here are some of the things that happened in 2016 –
1. God Bless America
Perhaps what is the biggest blow in the face of 2016, Donald Trump was elected the POTUS winning against Hillary Clinton and proving how we’re still not ready to accept women as our leaders. After facing criticism for all his misogynist statements, we all had our bets on Hillary Clinton as she was definitely a better choice between the two. But thanks to the growing army of blind supporters, America made its decision and we’re all waiting to see what Trump makes of the nation.
For the very first time in India, Coldplay, the British band came for a concert through the Global Citizen Festival organized in Mumbai. While the entry was free through various action programs organized by Global Citizen, this concert became an internet meme because of the high price of tickets. From selling phones to kidneys, people made all sorts of comments on the ticket price. Despite this, more than 80,000 people gathered on the MMRDA Grounds in BKC, Mumbai to witness their favourite band perform.
3. Pokemon Go
It came, it saw, it conquered and it vanished. Nintendo announced the game being introduced to smart phone platform based on the cartoon called Pokemon which had every 90s kid rejoicing. With it’s release, not only did the Nintendo sales increase but the game was being downloaded worldwide through apk format wherever it was not available. However, the success was short lived as it required a lot of time from the players and eventually people started getting bored.
Seldom you get to hear that a Chaiwaala is trending on social media platforms. India already has a Chaiwaala who is now the honourable Prime Minister of the country and has been the talk of the town for a month now. But the Pakistani Chaiwaala had girls drooling over his handsome face when a picture of him uploaded by a photographer went viral. Owing to his popularity, he is now being offered modelling contracts and his life has completely changed. Who said internet wasn’t a boon?
5. No Baahubali
A huge disappointment in Indian cinema came with the sequel of Baahubali being shifted to 2017. The first installment was able to garner 500 crores at the box office making it the highest grossing film ever. The second installment was scheduled to release this year but now has been shifted to 2017. While it left many fans disappointed, fan theories still try to find out exactly why Katappa killed Baahubali. This question needs to be answered soon.
6. Har Har Modi
November 8 was a day when the whole world’s eyes were on the United States of America as they were going to choose a successor to Barack Obama. Efficiently stealing the limelight from one of the world’s super powers, our Prime Minister announced demonetization that has the country going crazy even today. With the ban on 500 and 1000 rupee notes, Modi ji claimed to take a step towards curbing black money. The situation is a little better now but it surely needs to improve as many people have to bear the ill-effects of this sudden decision.
A very sad year indeed for everyone where we lost great artists, politicians and people. David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Jayalalitha, among many Indian and international personalities that ruled our hearts passed away this year. Many innocent lives were lost in the Orlando shooting, Aleppo, Berlin, Italy and Nice due to terrorism. The Uri attack at home made us all pray for the safety of our soldiers while the flood victims in Chennai made us worry about the calamities by nature.
Please be better 2017.
