Television, movies or any visual medias serve as an important medium of spreading awareness about important things, but very few are able to utilize them properly. Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie starrer Girl, Interrupted is a real life story of Susanna Keyes, an author who suffered from Borderline Personality Disorder. In her novel, Girl, Interrupted, she talks about the different people she met, especially Lisa Rowe, who made a huge impact in her life and changed her perspective entirely.

Priyadarshan is known for making funny movies. But with this one, he brought out an important issue in the public. Starring Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan and Shiney Ahuja in lead roles, the movie follows the life of Avni who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. Vidya Balan did absolute justice to the role with her incredible performance as Avni.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Charlie, a young adult and sexual abuse survivor finds it difficult to make friends. Nervous in the new life he is about to enter, it starts getting better when his seniors befriend him and show him the world in a different way. This coming of an age story is a beautiful reminder of how the worst of times pass for a better and brighter tomorrow, full of hope that makes you happy.
Parveen Babi’s life was filled with mental health issues. Woh Lamhe is Mahesh Bhatt’s iconic tribute to the actress and his lover, starring Kangana Ranaut and Shiney Ahuja. The story is a reflection on how Bhatt’s life used to be when he was involved with the actress, dealing with her issues and his own. He always cited the actress as a mentor in his life.
Gauri Shinde directed Dear Zindagi, starring Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan, tries to bring out mental health issues out in the open. Kaira, a young and ambitious cinematographer who seemingly lives a perfect life cannot sleep at night. Failing relationships and a rough childhood drives her to go to therapy sessions. Her therapist, Jug, helps her overcome through the difficulty.
A Beautiful Mind
If you don’t know who John Nash is, today, the World Mental Health day would be a great time to watch this movie. Inspired by the life of a mathematician, A Beautiful Mind is an incredible story of a professor’s journey towards understanding his illness, overcoming it and finally making peace with it. Russell Crowe’s incredible portrayal of John Nash will make you feel for the character who can’t control his mind.
Silver Linings Playbook
Illness: Bipolar Disorder
When Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and David O. Russell come together, you know a cinematic brilliance will emerge. The movie that got Lawrence her the Oscar, Silver Linings Playbook is a story of dealing with mental illness. Pat suffers from bipolar disorder and Tiffany deals with depression. The two characters help each other grow out of their illness, making our hearts go out to both of them.
