Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Review

Every day is a mystery when you are a Harry Potter franchise fan. Fan theories, revelations from JK Rowling herself, content on Tumblr and Reddit, the list is endless. You either spend all your time reading them or making theories of your own. That’s just how it is. When Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was announced, you couldn’t control your excitement like every other Potterhead. On November 16th, the second part of the trilogy and the 10th movie in the Wizarding World universe came out. If you haven’t seen it, don’t continue further, huge spoilers ahead. Let’s get right into Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald –

1. New adventures with Newt Scamander
In the first part, Newt bids farewell to Tina and returns home. Due to the last visit to America, Newt’s license to travel is revoked. But is that going to stop him from travelling to Paris, especially when Dumbledore asks of him to seek Credence? You guessed it right, absolutely not. With Tina being there already, Newt and Jacob travel to Paris illegally, with lots of adventures lying ahead.

2. New characters
We are introduced to many new characters in The Crimes of Grindelwald. Apart from Dumbledore, played by Jude Law, Leta Lestrange (Zoƫ Kravitz), Theseus Scamander (Callum Turner), Nagini (Claudia Kim), Yusuf Kama (Willian Nadylam) and Nicholas Flamel (Brontis Jodorowsky) are introduced for the first time. Some of these characters we have seen or heard about in the Harry Potter franchise.

3. Dumbledore and Grindelwald
JK Rowling has confirmed that Dumbledore is gay. His only lover was Grindelwald, whom he had to defeat for the greater good. The movie throws light on this by introducing Dumbledore and somewhat explaining his relationship with Grindelwald. They had made a blood pact of never fighting one another, which is why Dumbledore is reluctant to confront Grindelwald in the movie.

4. The Crimes of Grindelwald
In the movie, it is not clear as to what exactly is Grindelwald’s crime. He does kill a family and takes their Parisian apartment (which is indeed a terrible crime but nothing compared to that of Voldemort). But yes, he is hell-bent on ruling both the wizarding world and the muggle world and is seen gathering followers to complete the mission. Maybe the following movies go in more depth.

5. The future of Fantastic Beasts
The Crimes of Grindelwald ends with Newt Scamander joining the Ministry of Magic and gives Dumbledore the vial, taken from Grindelwald. In the end, we learn about Credence’s true identity. He is Aurelius Dumbledore, brother of Albus Dumbledore. It comes as an absolute shock and we have all known Dumbledore to have only one brother. The coming movies are going to help us understand this dynamic better.

We would all trade lives with Jacob Kowalski willingly. What a lucky muggle!
