All you teenage boys and girls who cannot wait to grow up and be independent, let me burst that bubble for you. It’s no fun growing up. It’s definitely not what you have in mind. Growing up is tough. If you thought it was all like the Friends show set up where you’ll be chilling all the time, making jokes and spending time with your best friends, it’s quite the opposite actually. Here’s what it is to grow up –
1. Paying Bills
The very first step of growing up is paying bills. That’s right, all the services that you use are given money for. Did you know that? You’ll know once you grow up. Nothing is free, absolutely nothing. You’ll have to buy your own food, cook it on your own, eat it on your own, in short, do everything on your own. Growing up is paying bills until you die. Are you ready? No you’re not.
Growing up is all about working your ass off on weekdays and sleeping in on the weekend. You don’t have the time or the energy to party once you get into the routine of working eight hours a day every week. When you get that two day break, you just want to lay in bed, keeping human contact to the bear minimum. If you thought growing up was partying all night on Saturday, you are in for a huge surprise.
3. Attending marriages
Another aspect of growing up is attending marriages of people you’ve grown up with. When you can’t even figure out your own life, you’re forced to wonder how others are getting married and getting things sorted for them. Here, you can’t even take yourself, let alone taking care of another human being. But you’ll still attend their marriage, just to feel worse about you, and also because where else would you get free food.
4. Sleeping at 10
When you’re a grown up, sleeping at 10 voluntarily is something that you follow religiously. There may be an earthquake at 9:59, but you’ll make sure your bed is ready so that you can sleep by 10:00 like everyday. This is not because you’re tired, you might have done nothing all day. But this new life of yours doesn’t let you get enough sleep which is why you choose that over everything else. When you grow up, you realize that nothing is more important than sleeping.
5. Being tired all the time
Even after sleeping at 10 pm and waking up at 7 am, you feel tired. Not because you didn’t get a sound sleep, but because being tired becomes a part of your personality when you grow up. The very response to every ‘how are you’ is ‘tired’, because that is indeed what you feel even when you’ve been napping all day. You don’t have energy to go out for drinks, party, or even talk to other human beings. The drama that you once loved is something you want to stay away from now.
Yep, that’s pretty much it.
